Writing For Television with Angelica Rowell and Kyra Jones

Have you ever had a great idea for a TV show, but didn’t know how or where to get started?

We get it! Which is why BLAC offered a Writing for Television Workshop on September 6th at 1pm PST/ 3pm CST with writers Kyra Jones and Angelica Rowell.

⁣⁣⁣During this workshop attendees learned tips and tricks on how to start a pilot, how to create a character driven plot line, and what producers look for in a script.⁣⁣⁣

Angelica Rowell (she/her) is a singer, actress, writer, and plus size model based in Los Angeles, California. She holds degrees in both Classical Voice and Theatre from the University of California, Irvine. She is passionate about social activism through the arts and strives to create works that open doors for the marginalized, as well as initiate a dialogue about controversial topics. Over the past year she has been focused on TV writing and her pilot "Plus", a semi-autobiographical story about a tall, fat, biracial girl in the theatre community, has gotten Rowell noticed by networks such as HBO, Warner Brothers, and Netflix.

Kyra Jones (she/her) is a Black queer screenwriter, actor, and filmmaker based in Chicago. She holds a degree in Theatre and Gender Studies from Northwestern University. In 2019, Kyra co-wrote, executive produced, and starred in the award-winning web series, The Right Swipe (OTV), which was an official selection at Austin Film Festival, Urban World Film Festival, and as several others and took home the Best Web Series award at the Portland Comedy Film Festival. Her half-hour comedypilotscript, Good VIbes Only, has placed in several competitions, including the Sundance Episodic Lab, Diverse Voices, and the Nashville Film Festival. She's currently in pre-production for her first feature, Go to the Body, a boxing film that explores sexual violence in the Black community. Her extensive work as a sex educator and survivor advocate lends itself to her artistic endeavors, inspiring scripts that focus on Black women's experiences with relationships, sex, and intimacy.
